| シドニー・エドワード・パジェット(Sidney Edward Paget,1860-1908)の描いた356点のイラストの中から、ホームズとワトスンが二人連れで歩いている場面2点と、鉄道の客車で座っている場面3点の合計5点を採り上げ、右か左の問題を論じる。散歩や追跡では、左の歩道を歩いたことがわかるものと、南下した歩道の左右が判断出来ないものがあること。また、列車の客車内でホームズが座る座席は、いつも進行方向を向いた右側の窓際の席と推測出来るものがあることを指摘する。その中で「バスカヴィル家の犬」のリージェント・ストリートのイラストが、同じ絵柄で左右2枚存在していること、パジェットのSPのサインが無いことを挙げ、その理由を様々な角度から検証する。 | ||

The old woman who picked up the ring Hope left at the murder scene was not Hope’s friend but Hope himself in disguise. 4. | 「緋色の研究」の筋書き上の4つの疑問点を挙げ、それらの不自然さを払拭する提案を示す。①ジェファソン・ホープが逮捕されることが分かっているホームズの住居へ出かけていく最終段階について。この部分を、グレグスンとレストレードに真相を打ち明け、警察に同行してホープ逮捕に行くとする。②ドレッパの名刺にあったアメリカ合衆国クリーブランドの警察への電報による照会結果について。この部分を、グレグスンがレストレードにも情報を伝え、同内容の返信をホームズも受信したが、そのタイミングは老婆に指輪を渡して取り逃がした後とする。③ドレッパ殺害現場に置き忘れた指輪をもらいに訪ねる老婆について。この部分は、身長は隠しようがないが髪を白く染め、前かがみのヨタヨタ初老男に変装。またホープの身長を5.2フィート程度（170cm）に原著を変更する。④ドレッパ殺害現場に置き忘れた結婚指輪を取り戻しに引き返したホープが、酔っ払いに化けて見逃してもらうことについて。この部分を、ホープは酔っ払いの演技ではなく、やや知能が低い男が、コロンバインの新流行歌かなにかを唄っている、とする。 | ||

| 三津木春影の呉田博士シリーズのホームズ譚翻案「名馬の犯罪」について。筆者は初めて読んだ時にいくつかの疑問を持ち、①なぜネタばれとなるような題名にしたのか。②なぜ松戸競馬場なのだろうか。③なぜ競馬や競馬関係者を原作以上に悪く書いているのか。④登場人物の名前が途中で変わっているのはなぜか。⑤原作にない余計な推理が付け加えられているのはなぜか。三津木が「名馬の犯罪」を翻案した際に頭をよぎったのは、数年前に松戸競馬場で話題になった東京朝日新聞の記事ではないか、と指摘する。記事の内容は寺内陸軍大臣が馬券を買うべからず、と訓示したのに、予備役だけでなく現役軍人までが松戸競馬場に出入りし、馬券を購入していた事件。本当に悪いのは馬ではないとの思いから「名馬の犯罪」という題名を付け、事件の真相が競馬関係者の自作自演であることを強調するために加筆されたのが、最後の頓珍漢な推理だと考察する。 | ||
